Definition of house music by Guy Styles:

"House is a feeling.
It is why house lovers love house music.
Like that words: "And when you enter my house, it then become our house"
I think the term "visual" is not what we are looking for. Describing
house visually is like video taping the wind. It doesn't really work
cause we can't see house. We have to feel it.
Description of the feeling:
When I know I am hearing good house, it is when I get the house
feeling. It is similar to love. When the house starts to get funky I
start to get a warm feeling in my chest, and I get that tingley rush
to my head like when you're about to see your girlfriend who you
havn't seen for 7 days. I forget about all my problems and worries
that have been troubling me. Then my body just has to start dancing.

In my life, I considered house music to be (almost) spiritual, and
dancing for hours on a friday or saturday night is (almost) like
church.
I know I am not the only one who feels this way, for I have spoken to
others about it who have finished my sentences with exactly what I
have said here."

Podstawa do stworzenia house'u stalo sie powstajace we wczesnych latach siedemdziesiatych DISCO. Narodziny tej muzyki oznaczaly rownoczesnie pojawienie sie pierwszych dj'ow oraz klubow (Discoteque), w ktorych atmosfere tworzyly kolorowe migajace swiatla i głosna muzyka. Caly ruch zaczal sie rozwijac mniej - wiecej w latach 1974 - 75. Przelomowym momentem bylo pojawienie sie na rynku Technicsow 1500, ktore jako pierwsze gramofony z plynna regulacja obrotow daly poczatek nowej "erze dj'ow".
W tym momencie koniecznie wypada wymienic kilka nazwisk. Jednym z pierwszych, ktorzy nauczyli sie techniki miksowania byl klubowy promotor Nick Siano. Od niego wlasnie tajniki te poznali Larry Levan (gral w klubie Paradise Garage) oraz Frankie Knuckles, ktorzy stali sie wkrotce slynnymi dj'ami z okolic Nowego Jorku. Wlasnie Levan byl pierwszym, ktory zmiksowal dwie plyty dajac tym samym przyklad innym klubowym dj'om, dla ktorych miksowanie stawalo sie powoli nieodlacznym elementem kolejnych setow.
W ten sposob powstala nowa kultura. Swiat dj'ow i muzyki disco. Niestety ogromna popularyzacja stylu disco i co za tym idzie komercjalizacja, spowodowaly jego upadek. Do tego stopnia, ze w Chicago
w 1981 r. publicznie spalono tysiace plyt z ta muzyka (ludzie, pomyslcie ! Tyle vinyli ...) W Ameryce wlasciwie zaprzestano produkowania tego typu plyt, czasem pojawilo sie tylko cos w Europie.
Ale nie byl to koniec sceny w Chicago. Tam wlasnie narodzil sie house. Wiesz, co bylo tego przyczyna ?

W 1977 r. Knuckles przeniosl sie do Chicago, gdzie pracowal w klubie Warehouse. Gral wszystko, co wpadlo mu w reke, jednak nieciekawie zrobilo sie po roku 1980, kiedy zaprzestano produkcji plyt disco. Wtedy zaczal eksperymentowac, aby stworzyc nowe brzmienia ze starych plyt. Nie mozna bylo przeciez zawiesc spragnionych disco klubowiczow. Zastepowano glownie prawdziwa perkusje automatami (Roland 808, 909 - nie wypada nie znac brzmien, wiec odsylam np. do programu ReBirth 338 ver2.0), miksowano wokale, zmieniano tempo. I tak powstal nowy gatunek - HOUSE.
Za ojca pierwszej plyty house'owej uwaza sie Jesse'go Saundersa ("One seventeen", 1983). Warto wspomniec rowniez o pojawieniu sie (jestesmy w tej chwili gdzies okolo 1985) dj'a Pierre, ktory bedac
w posiadaniu mojej ukochanej 303-ki (odsylam ponownie do ReBirtha) stal sie tworca nowego gatunku, zwanego ACID HOUSE.


Skad nazwa HOUSE ? Tutaj mamy do wyboru dwie rownie dobre i bardzo prawdopodobne teorie. Pierwsza: nazwa pochodzi od miejsa powstawania pierwszych kawalkow house'owych - na poczatku dj'e miksowali przeciez w zaciszu domowym (house). Druga: wywodzi pochodzenie gatunku od nazwy klubu "Warehouse". Ktora wolisz ? Nie warto sie zastanawiac, lepiej posluchaj sobie dobrych house'owych numerkow.
Zanim to jednak zrobisz, jeszcze co nieco o samej muzyce, czyli jak ja rozpoznac.

Na pewno wiesz czym jest disco i masz pojecie, jak wygladala owa ogromna kultura, a jesli nie,
to mozesz poszukac filmu "Goraczka sobotniej nocy" ("Saturday Night Fever") z Travolta, ktory w 100% w pelni to wszystko obrazuje. Kolorowe, jasne swiatla, rownie kolorowe ciuchy, boa ze sztucznych pior, afro na glowie, wyszywane cekinami spodnie dzwony, migoczace kule pod sufitem, (ludzie na LSD), niezwykle charakterystyczna muzyka. Zeby zrozumiec, trzeba uslyszec i trzeba zobaczyc. Nie myl jednak pod zadnym wzgledem pojec DISCO i DANCE, jak to sie czesto wielu niewtajemniczonym zdarza. To nie to samo ! Slowem "dance" (jezeli mamy na mysli sam gatunek, a nie ogolnie muzyke taneczna), mozesz okreslac wspolczesna muzyke grana w dyskotekach (nie wypada wymieniac na tej stronie przedstawicieli). Chyba wszyscy wiedza o co chodzi ? Więc idziemy dalej...


Teraz wedrujac po gatunkach wypada wymienić GARAGE. Jest to styl posredniczacy pomiędzy disco
a house. Powstal w Nowym Jorku we wspomnianym juz wczesniej klubie Paradise Garage. Duzo w nim wokalu, przede wszystkim damskiego, pojawiaja sie tez często bardzo dziwne, momentami smieszne
a nawet kiczowate dzwieki (co nie znaczy, ze nie nadaja sie do sluchania). Garage czesto bywa popowy, ale istnieje rowniez jego bardzo popularna "mocniejsza" odmiana SPEED GARAGE, grana przez np. Pete'a Haywood'a, brytyjskiego dj'a specjalizujacego sie glownie w speed garage (o ile dobrze sobie przypominam, to goscil w 1997 r. w warszawskim klubie Ground Zero). Slawa speed garage jest Armand van Helden, ktory przyspieszyl tradycyjny garage, przefiltrowal wokale i nalozyl ambientowo-acidowe dzwieki na mocna linie basu. Mixował Tori Amos czy Sneakers Pimps i zdaniem samego Haywooda,
to jest wlasnie "czysty, piekny speed garage". Posluchaj ! Jesli nie jestes wielbicielem tego stylu,
to moze nim zostaniesz ?

Na koniec wedrowki po housowej krainie, warto wspomniec o samej idei, jaka kryje nazwa stylu. House, poczatkowo tylko dla czarnych, stal sie muzyka roznych nacji. House symbolizowal jeden wielki dom pelen ludzi o roznych kolorach skory, ktorych laczy jedno - muzyka.

The Era Captured Here Is From The Beginning Of The Movement (1981) Many People Don't Remember That WBMX Was Jammin' All The Way Back In '81!. To It's Last Year (1988) Of Greatness. Memories Of Armando Rivera's "Chicago Street Hits" ['a show that broke new music all other stations would be adding months later as "pop hits"] And More. You'll Hear A Special Focus On The Hot Mix Five - From It's First Incarnation To It's Last. The Hot Mix Five Were A Mix Team Formed By CyberRadio2000.com's CTO Lee Michaels (Then PD Of WBMX).
